I often use Smart Notebook in my classroom, but I will be the first to admit it is often used to post an agenda or as an extra whiteboard in the classroom to call students up to work out problems. My students have always loved getting to write on the Smart Board. This week, I needed to teach elapsed time and to be honest, I was really struggling with introducing it. I wanted an interactive lesson, which kept seeming to be impossible as our school only had a total of 10 mini clocks for the students to work with in a hands-on manner at their desks.
I remembered Smart Notebook and was able to create a lesson using it that I was really proud of and my students loved! I searched for a clock and found one under "interactive and multimedia." This clock allowed us to move the minute and hour hand to review how to use a clock to tell time. I was then able to put two clocks side by side and call on students to set each clock to a different time, so that we could discuss the elapsed time between the two. Being able to visualize the clock and also interact with it, really made my students engaged in the lesson. This especially worked well as it allowed all students the opportunity to engage in the lesson. Even my students who typically shy away from participating were raising their hands to go to the Smart Board and work with the clocks. This was a great way to review basic time and introduce elapsed time.
I have always known about locating interactive tools on Smart Notebook, but I will admit I often forget to use this tool. Seeing the engagement within my kids for this lesson has motivated me to continue to find ways to use Smart Notebook. They have asked constantly since this lesson when we can use it again. How do you use Smart Notebook in your math classroom?

I can relate to not fully using the Smartboard. I have found that I can find some lessons on the SmartExchange. This website allows teachers to share the lessons they have created. In the past, they have had some good lessons; however, most good ones now require you to pay. I have had to go to TeachersPayTeachers and buy some lessons. In my opinion, I would rather pay a few dollars for a good interactive lesson, instead of struggling to create one on my own.
